2019 has been a good year for Ghana – Finance Minister.

The Finance Minister (Mr. Ken Ofori Atta), in accordance with Article 179 of the 1992 Constitution and section 21 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921) presented the budget for the 2020 fiscal year.

During his presentation, he stated that the government has been able to achieve significant structural changes that have led to economic growth and stability.

According to him, the economy was in bad shape when they took office from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2016 but for the competent leadership of H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo, the economy is moving in the right direction. He said the economy they took over had a banking sector that was comatose with a decline in the Agriculture sector, high-interest rate, and high youth unemployment.

He stated that the government has been able to stabilize and restore sanity in the financial sector through the massive clean-up of banking and non-banking sectors.

Mr. Ofori Atta said that the government in 2019, was able to achieve and continue its flagship programs i.e free SHS, one district one dam, Nation-builders Corps (Nabco), etc. He stated that 1.2 million students will access free SHS by 2020 and about 97000 graduates have been enrolled onto Nabco where about 48,000 and 49,000 trainee teachers and nurses respectively have received their allowance and 55,000 nurses have been employed.

He said that signals for economic growth are positive and the country is on the right trajectory to achieve significant growth in 2020.
