Floods in the Upper East

On Monday October 14,2019 , the torrential downpour in Kasina Nankana East and South , Bulisa South ,Bawku , Zongo and Garu Timpane districts caused the above mentioned areas to flood rendering may homeless . this flood als caused the lives of 28 people and injured 19 people severely leaving 640 people displaced.

Mr. Jerry Asamani , the Upper East regional NADMO cordinator on 3FM sunrise moring on Thursday said that residents in these areas had been warned about the impending disaster due to the structure and state of their buildings , which are mostly over aged . Mr. Asamani therefore called for legal frame work to prevent people from building hapharzardly.

According to our source , the 640 people displaced have been put up in churches , mosques and schools . Also, some of the injured people have been discharged from hospitals for local treatment and 19 are in the hospital.

A victim who was later interviwed in the Kasina Nankana West district , pleaded with the government and general public to help them build their houses and supply them with food since they lost most of their food in the flood and the little food they have has gone bad due to lack of storage.

Mr. Asamani later told Onua FM ‘Yen Sempa’ that NADMO officials have been sent to their headquqrters in Accra to get more supplies. he explained that they needed cements , roofing sheet ,roofing nails ,used clothes ,detergents ,pumping machines ,solar lamps , food stuff and many more .

Mr Asamani also explained that ,the cemetries were underwater which had caused the oppening and exposing the caskets and its content . He further went went on to to explain that the water from the cemetries were flowing into the nearby sources of water ( boreholes and wells) for the residents leavng their water contaminated . The fear now is the outbraek of an epidemic.

The Upper East Regional Health Director , Dr. Ofosu urged residents to boil water before use.
