GFA vote to increase the number of premier league clubs.

The first agenda at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) extraordinary congress were issues relating to litigation. Accra Great Olympics and King Faisal FC took the GFA to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and the ruling from CAS was for the GFA to re-instate the two clubs in the premier division.

The congress was divided as some members opposed to the Normalisation Commissions'(NC) proposal to increase the number of premier league teams for the 2019/2020 season to accommodate the two teams and put an end to the litigation issues . According the proposal by the NC, if congress is not satisfied with the 18-team league it can revert to the 16 team league after the 2019/2020 season by relegating 5 clubs.

Lawyer Ntow Fianko was of the view that increasing the number of Premier League clubs will need an amendment in the statutes of the GFA rules so he raised the motion to shelve the proposal of the NC. However, Mr. Randy Abbey had a different view and he sought to advise members to be a little flexible and less legalistic with the issue so that they can ratify the proposal of the NC. He further stated that it will help the new Football Association to start on a clean slate.

The house took a vote and 64 members out of the 120 voted for the motion to increase the number of Premier League teams from 16 to 18 teams for the 2019/2020 season.

Do you think the decision to of the congress to increase the number of teams in the premier league is the best?
