Kotoko appoints Johnson Smith as assistant coach

Kumasi Asante Kotoko has today released an official statement confirming Coach Johnson Smith as their new assistant coach and to replace Akapko Patron for the coming seasons.

Mr. Smith signed a two-year deal at the club’s secretariat on Friday, 11th October 2019 becoming the club’s new Assistant coach following an expiration of the contract of Raphael Akakpo.

This will be the third time Johnson Smith has joined the club’s technical team. He served as the assistant coach to Bashiru Hayford in 2007 and was also appointed as caretaker coach for the club after the exit of coach Paa Kwesi Fabin in 2008.

Coach smith over the years has seen an impressive boost to his portfolio through the experiences he had gained in coaching some clubs in the premier and second-tier leagues. After exiting Kotoko, he joined Berekum Arsenal and proceeded after a season to Bebiani Gold Stars where he spent three seasons.

His performance led him to be appointed as the head coach for Karela United where he led the club (Karela United) to gain Premier League promotion after just a season. Karela United was third on the Premier league log before the league was suspended.

Their impressive performance in the just ended Normalization Committee’s Special Tournament where their fine form was put to a halt by Kumasi Asante Kotoko in the finals.

Coach Smith will now be the new assistant coach to head coach Kjetil Zachariassen for the next two seasons at the Kum Apem Club.

He rejoins the club after a massive reshuffle in the technical team by the management of the club. He thanked the club for the confidence shown in him and pledged to do his best for the Porcupine Warriors.
