The WAFU tournament ended today and the Teranga Lions of Senegal have lifted the trophy over the defending champions Black Stars of Ghana. The tournament which started some weeks ago saw scintillating performances from participating teams from the West African States.
However, the Black Stars B and their Senegalese counterparts had really impressed throughout the tournament and it is no wonder they both got to the finals which were hosted in Senegal.
The finals was a competitive one with Senegal having the best of ball possession. None of the two teams was able to break the deadlock at the end of the 90 minutes and the game had to run to the extra time.
The Senegalese were the first to open the scoring with 13 minutes to end the second half of the extra time courtesy a goal from Youcef Badji. However, the Black Stars had a quick response and had the equalizer through Joseph Esso barely two minutes after going down.
The extra time ended with one goal apiece. It all came down to penalty shootouts and it ended 3 – 1 in favour of Senegal. The Senegalese netted all their three successive penalties whiles the Ghanaians netted only one of the four penalties they played. Augustine Ocran, Fatawu Dauda and Justice Blay all missed their shootouts with Appiah Mccarthy scoring the only penalty for the Black Stars of Ghana. Kane, Abdoulaye, and Babacar all scored their penalties.
This is the first time the Senegalese have won an international or major trophy and the euphoria at the stadium was electrifying.
Congratulations to the Teranga Lions on their maiden trophy.
The next tournament will be hosted by Nigeria in 2021.
